Bluetooth stereo audio will be an official feature in the iPod Touch 2 this coming summer after releasing the new version of the operating system (3.0 OS), according to Greg Joswiak, Apple’s VP of iPod and iPhone product marketing. However, iPod users might be a little disappointed to hear that this “new” feature will cost more money despite the fact that the current iPod Touch 2 has Bluetooth capabilities, but so far, this feature has been locked.
Yeah, although this new Bluetooth feature -that will be available in iPods with the new operating system (3.0 OS)- is a great news for users of iPod Touch 2, it is really surprising to know that the current devices have had these capabilities all the time. Anyway, in order to activate Bluetooth on iPod Touch 2, users will need to upgrade the software, which will be free to iPhone owners, but will cost iPod Touch owners 9.95 dollars to download.
So, is the 3.0 OS going to activate all the Bluetooth capabilites for iPod Touch? Well, it is known that iPod Touch 2 has a chip named “Broadcom BCM4325″, which was revealed by an analysis made by iFixit in September 2008. iFixit confirmed that this chip was being used in the iPod, and maybe it was originally intended to support some features for the Nike+ Sport Kit.
In short, the chip is able to support Bluetooth audio and data transmission, but it is disabled currently. And, apparently, Apple had disabled it deliberately.
