In order to boost the popularity of its Zune music player, Microsoft announced a new Zune subscription on Thursday, which will allow users to keep 10 songs every month.
The monthly subscription model is one of the main differences between Microsoft’s Zune and Apple’s much more popular iPod. Currently, a Zune Pass subscription allows Zune owners to access to millions of songs for 14.99 dollars a month, but they cannot store songs locally on their Zune devices.
The new offer will allow users to store up to 10 songs per month for $10 (a month) and without any extra cost.
With this service, songs can be copied to a CD or another format and users can enjoy them any time they want, even if the Zune Pass subscription has expired. According to Microsoft, some agreements have been signed with Emi Music, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and independent distributors like Ingraves, Independent Online Distribution Alliance and The Orchard. Those agreements were necessary in order to offer this new subscription option.
